Рис. \(1\). English

— Hi, Basil!

— Hi, Sam. How are you?

— Fine, thanks. You?

— Good. Great, actually — I'm going to take the English language course in Lancaster next month.

— Wow, that's great, congrats! So you prefer the British variant, aren't you?

— Well, I don't know, to be honest. I've been studying English for ten years and I'm still not sure what variant to stick to. British English sounds good, I like the RP accent (received pronunciation). In a classroom I try not to use American English vocabulary, but I watch a lot of American movies and TV shows, I listen to American music mostly and I guess this variant comes naturally.

— I see what you are talking about. American English is popularized by the US culture. By the way, you've just used the word 'movie', not 'film', and it's mostly the American variant.

— Yeah, so that's a problem. It's no good to mix it in everyday speech.

— It's entirely up to you. Whatever you choose, you'll make no mistake. All in all, English has become a global language long ago. Billions of people speak it as their second or foreign language. I think the most important thing is to know it well and be able to communicate.

— I agree with you.
