Read the text about pros and cons of tourism.
Thousands of people around the world are very keen travellers. They visit new corners of our planet, experience other cultures and see various lifestyles and habits. Travelling is a way to see and learn more than just lying on the couch and reading magazines. No wonder that a lot of people enjoy visiting new places.
Tourism as an industry contributes a lot to the economy of countries attracting a large number of visitors. Also tourism includes transport, food, hotel, entertainment industries and local businesses hugely benefit from visitors. But what are the consequences of that? How does the industry affect the culture and the environment?
Tourism leads to overuse of water, as well as soil, air and water pollution and creates waste problems through overconsumption. Also tourism is responsible for about \(5\) % of greenhouse emissions in the atmosphere. Destruction of natural landmarks and monuments is one of the effects of the industry as well. Some damage is done accidentally, but some tourists leave graffiti or carve their names on a stone on purpose.
Historic places are crowded by millions of holidaymakers and therefore whole regions become dependent on tourism. During the high season the prices even for the essentials rise drastically. Local residents and businesses suffer from it.
The alternative is eco-tourism. It includes raising environmental awareness, providing benefit for the conservation and minimizes harmful impact on the environment. By travelling responsibly we can contribute to the areas we do to and support local lifestyles.
