Read the text about Columbus Day.
Рис. \(1\). A monument to Christopher Columbus
It is still unclear who were the first European to set foot on the American soil. It is for sure that the Vikings reached America \(500\) years before Columbus, but it was this famous Italian explorer who paved the way to the colonisation and exploration of the new lands. We know little about his life. He was born on the territory of modern Italy, in Genoa. He lived in Portugal and Spain for a while and was an experienced sailor. Spanish monarchs, the Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand sponsored Columbus’expedition. Assuming that the Earth is round, he hoped to find a new sea way to India which was a place that supplied European cities with gold and spices. However, he was rewarded with discovering the whole new continent.

Columbus Day is celebrated annually in a number of countries, including the United States, Argentina, Peru and Spain. In the USA Columbus Day is a legal holiday. It's on the second Monday of October. Traditions of Columbus Day are deeply rooted in American-Italian heritage, so people launch fireworks, eat Italian food, dance and wear bright costumes.  Due to the controversy of Columbus Day, as his expedition opened the way to enslaving millions of aboriginal Americans, the Indigenous People's Day was suggested.
