Trafalgar Square.
Рис. \(1\). Trafalgar Square
In \(1805\) the British Royal Navy defeated France and Spain (the allies at the time) in the Battle of Trafalgar. This great victory was one of the most important during the Napoleonic wars. Trafalgar square in he heart of London was built to commemorate this battle. The British commander, Lord Horatio Nelson, died in the battle. To perpetuate the Admiral and his triumph, the Nelson Column was constructed.
The Nelson statue was sculpted by Edward Bailey. The pedestal is decorated with four bronze panels. They depict famous battles in British history. The bronze lions were added later.
The National Gallery, one of the most famous museums, is in the north of Trafalgar Square.
The Gallery exhibits extensive collections of various European schools of art. The square is popular with visitors who come to relax, watch pavement artists, or eat their lunch and feed the pigeons.
Like Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square is often referred to in the British press as a place where mass meetings and demonstrations are held. The traditional anti-war march is among them.
